Getting Through the Holidays After Divorce
There are a number of individuals, couples, and parents who handled their first holiday after divorce. As attorneys who regularly work with clients going through divorce here in Texas, we frequently receive questions about what to do during this time, especially when it comes to balancing old with new traditions. We also hear from a number of clients that divorce has given them a special opportunity to have discussions with their children about what exactly they want to do during the holidays in terms of traditions, and to start new ones together.
Develop A Plan in Private
Still, that does not mean that coming up with a plan with the other parent is always easy, even if you do speak with your children and take their concerns into account. It is far too easy to get lost in the negativity that may have accompanied your divorce, however, most experts recommend that you develop a plan together as parents regarding the holidays and keep the children out of any subsequent negativity. In order to avoid negativity, try to discuss the schedule in private.
Take Your Children’s Needs into Account
Also keep in mind that states and courts work to prioritize children spending equal time with both parents, if possible, and this is usually ideal during the holidays as well. Your children may also have a preference as to outside family members that they want to see as well. Focusing on the children’s needs can help make the holidays less stressful in general.
Spending Time with New Friends & Family
Many divorced individuals also find that, due to splitting their children with the other parent, they have more time on their hands, and this affords them opportunities to perhaps connect with family and friends that they have not seen in a while, as well as take time to not only build new traditions, but stop and enjoy each moment instead of rushing through it.
When it comes to reaching out to people, being proactive is often recommended. Keep in mind that people are busy during the holidays, and it often pays off to keep reaching out and initiating contact.
Take Care of Yourself
Other tips suggested by experts include the following:
- Practicing self-care and being compassionate towards yourself. This includes engaging in the activities that make you happy
- Be thankful for what is going well in your life and try to keep a positive outlook
